My job situation recently changed. I went from a 6 figure income to 5 figures (about 50% pay cut) in my new job and I expect my salary to remain at this level for the forseeable future. The child support was the state maximum and was based upon my previous income and I continued to pay during the 6 months that I was out of work. My ex-wife recognizes the situation and has agreed that we should adjust the support payments to reflect the career change.
If we mutually agree to an amount either amongst ourselves or through the assistance of a mediator, do we have to go to court again and incur the costs and trauma ocne again? Is a personal agreement adequate? Would you recommend mediation to arrive at an equitable amount?
